5 Home Maintenance Tips

Once you own a home, it is important to keep it in good condition so that it stays in the same shape over the years. It might sound like a difficult task to keep a home in top shape, but doing simple home maintenance tasks regularly can make it quite easy!

Here are 5 home maintenance tips that will help you keep your home in good condition year round!

1. Check Your Filters

One of the things that can keep your home’s systems in good shape is clean filters, and it is one of the things that most people forget to do regularly – and sometimes not for years.

During a home inspection, inspectors will check air filters and furnace filters to see if they are new or have been cleaned recently.

Not cleaning or replacing filters will lead to allergens in the air of your home, as well as dust and pollutants. Not to mention, clogged and dirty filters are bad for the system itself, and will make them more likely to break & need maintenance.

2. Clear Out Your Gutters

Gutters aren’t the easiest thing to clean out, so many people neglect cleaning them and put them off until they start overflowing. This is not good for the health of your home, because gutters and downspouts are meant to direct runoff away from the base of your home.

Cleaning out your gutters regularly will keep debris from building up in them, and if you clean them often it won’t take you very long.

Oftentimes, home inspectors find issues with the foundation of homes because the gutters haven’t been allowing water to flow away from the house, and the foundation is wet and has shifted.

3. Flush Out Your Water Heater

Water heaters can collect sediment from the water in the bottom of the tank over time, so it is important to make sure that you flush out the water from the tank every so often.

Doing this will keep the water flowing smoothly and will reduce the chances of the heater breaking and needing to be repaired or replaced!

4. Re-Caulk Your Windows

Caulking can get dry and crack over time, allowing cold hot air to enter your home through the cracks. Re-sealing these cracks will help your home be more insulated – and will prevent the windows from releasing energy.

This will also save you money over time, because your home will be able to keep the cool or warm air from heaters and air conditioners in your home.

5. Touch Up Your Home’s Paint

Exterior and interior paint on your home isn’t just to make it look nice. Paint is also important because it is a sealant, protecting your home from water damage that can lead to rotting wood or rusted metal.

Paint is simple to touch up, and will keep your home protected, as well as looking great!
